OPINION - The Afghanistan Crisis

Over the last few weeks, the chaos in Afghanistan has been rising constantly. This crisis has been bringing out the true colors of many people, including the lack of support from President Biden and the absolutely disgusting behavior of Blackwater founder, Erik Prince. This article will cover all of that, starting with President Joe Biden.

As recently as Wednesday, August 25th, the White House was painting a distorted picture of Biden being a hero, rescuing the troops from the evil force of the Taliban. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki even went as far as to say that it couldn’t be described as “anything but a success.” Well she apparently didn’t realize this crisis is not yet over, and things took a major turn for the worse. On the following day, people are calling this catastrophe anything but a success. It’s an absolute mess, and Biden isn’t taking much action.

On the morning of Thursday, August 26th, bombings and gunfire at the Kabul airport left 13 U.S. troops dead. And while President Biden promises to get the remaining troops out, he also threatened to, “Hunt you [the terrorists] down and make you pay.” And with the way he’s handling things now, that will most likely only make matters worse.

Former President Donald Trump is speaking out (as always) about this issue, claiming that it is because of Biden’s “weakness”. I believe that in this situation, Trump would have handled things much better. He said long before the Taliban takeover that he wanted American troops out of Afghanistan. Now, President Biden and Former President Trump are arguing over this in a way reminiscent of the 2020 Presidential Debate.

On the other hand, we have our private business owners and entrepreneurs, most of which are not speaking about this issue. Elon Musk only commented on their lack of COVID-19 safety protocols as a joke (that did not go over well), but others like Erik Prince are actually doing something.

Erik Prince is founder and former C.E.O. of Blackwater, a private military supply company. Being quite the successful and wealthy man he is, he offered to shuttle people from Afghanistan back to the states. This all sounded great until he said he would charge them for it. $6,500 per person if you want a life-saving ride back to America! It’s ridiculous! He doesn’t care for the people dying in Afghanistan, just the opportunity to make money. It’s disgusting.

However, I do believe there is hope. If we can get our troops and allies out of harm’s way and avoid vengeful attacks, I think we can avoid further conflict. But first, we must save our troops before the August 31st deadline.
